Students wishing to pursue a more academic path can then continue with a PhD, which opens the door to a career in research, or choose an advanced master’s degree, often focused on professional specialisation.

It is a linear, coherent system recognised throughout Europe thanks to the Bologna Process, which harmonises qualifications and facilitates academic mobility.

Master of Arts and Master of Science

In Europe, however, the natural next step for many students after completing their bachelor’s degree is an MSc (Master of Science) or an MA Master of Arts), usually lasting one or two years. In practice, these programmes are equivalent to a Belgian master’s degree. Choosing to study abroad for a master’s degree after completing a bachelor’s degree is therefore perfectly logical. In fact, it is a strategic and internationally recognised option that can help you stand out in the job market.

An MSc is more focused on scientific, analytical, and technical subjects. This is where you will typically find programmes in finance or management. An MA is generally more oriented towards the humanities, public affairs, and international relations. If you find it difficult to identify these programmes on university websites, look for these acronyms.

The US system

In the United States, the system works differently. Many students stop studying after completing their bachelor’s degree, work for a few years, and then return to university to pursue an MBA, or Master of Business Administration. It is a high-level professional programme designed for people who already have several years of work experience. It does not replace an academic master’s degree; rather, it is a logical next step in a career-focused pathway. In Belgium, it would be comparable to an advanced master’s degree completed after an initial master’s degree, but with a stronger managerial and international focus and often at a much higher cost.

However, making the right choice requires careful consideration. Choosing a master’s degree is a strategic decision. It will shape your career path, influence your first professional opportunities, and may even determine the environment in which you develop. The aim is not to find the “best master’s degree” in absolute terms. No such perfect programme exists. The real challenge is to identify the master’s degree that best aligns with your profile, goals, and priorities. Where you study can matter even more. The university name, often one of the first lines on your CV, can determine the outcome of an application on its own. This may seem unfair, but in finance, consulting, and tech, it is an unavoidable reality.

These industries receive an overwhelming number of applications. Their main challenge is not necessarily identifying hidden talent, but avoiding recruitment mistakes. A poor hiring decision, even when the candidate presents well, can be extremely costly. To reduce this risk, recruiters tend to focus on a pool of institutions they consider reliable.

These institutions are known as target universities. Recruiters see them as trusted talent pools because being admitted already requires a certain level of academic achievement and selectivity. However, it is not only about prestige. These universities provide a complete ecosystem: structured career services, interview workshops, alumni conferences, career fairs with leading companies and banks, and often internal databases containing information about previous recruitment processes. This gives you a significant head start.

TIERS

To better understand how recruiters assess universities, institutions and business schools can be divided into three broad levels of recognition.

TIER 1

London School of Economics

London Business School

HEC Paris

Bocconi

University of St. Gallen

These institutions are recognised worldwide. Most students enter these universities at undergraduate level, and relatively few complete a traditional master’s degree there. A bachelor’s degree alone, even in a subject unrelated to economics, may be enough to enter a bulge bracket bank or a consulting firm. Students who continue their studies often do so for academic or doctoral purposes. Oxford and Cambridge therefore remain in a category of their own.

Belgium

In Belgium, the situation is more nuanced. Institutions such as KU Leuven, Solvay, Louvain School of Management (which notably offers the CEMS programme)), Vlerick and VUB provide strong programmes, often with excellent value for money. Courses are sometimes taught in English, with high-quality academic support, relevant corporate partnerships, and genuine intellectual rigour.

Their main advantage is affordability. For Belgian students, they are a logical and effective choice for those who want to work in Belgium or the Benelux. However, their recognition remains primarily regional. They do not yet compete with Tier 1 or Tier 2 institutions in terms of international visibility or placement in investment banking in London or New York.

If your ambition is to work in an international hub, it may be better to consider a master’s degree at a Tier 1 or Tier 2 institution. Even an exchange programme or summer school can give you access to many of their advantages, including their network, internal services, and the value of their name on your CV.

University or Business School

Before even considering which master’s degree to choose, it is essential to understand the distinction between the two main types of institutions you can apply to: universities and business schools. Both models coexist within European higher education, but they follow very different educational, cultural, and professional approaches. Failing to understand these differences may lead you to choose a master’s programme that does not match your goals or your preferred way of learning.

Universities

Universities place greater emphasis on theory, analysis, and intellectual independence. Learning mainly involves reading specialised books, taking notes, and attending lectures, all of which help students develop critical thinking, organise their ideas, and master advanced concepts. Assessment is primarily based on demanding but valuable written or oral examinations.

This environment is particularly suitable for methodical, curious, and analytical students, as well as those who want to build a strong academic foundation before specialising. It also provides excellent preparation for careers in research, the public sector, or international organisations.

In Belgium, most higher education institutions are universities. Some of the most prestigious universities in Europe include:

London School of Economics (LSE)

Bocconi

University of Saint-Gall

Erasmus University Rotterdam

Stockholm School of Economics

WU Vienna

UCD

Imperial College London

It is also worth noting that many of the best Master in Finance programmes are offered by leading universities rather than generalist business schools. This can be explained by the quality of their finance departments, which are led by renowned professors who publish in leading academic journals, the existence of programmes entirely dedicated to finance and covering highly technical areas, and their long-standing relationships with major institutions and active alumni networks within the industry. On a CV, an MSc in Finance from LSE or St. Gallen is generally perceived as more technical and selective than a general Master in Management.

However, universities can sometimes be less connected to the corporate world. Their alumni networks may be more limited, recruitment events less frequent, and partnerships with employers less developed. Students therefore need to be proactive in order to stand out by seeking internships, taking part in competitions, or becoming involved in projects outside the university.

Business School

Business schools, by contrast, focus on accelerated professional development. Their teaching approach is much more practical. Classes are usually held in small groups and are built around case studies, oral presentations, simulations, collaborative projects, and regular contributions from industry professionals. Learning relies heavily on active participation, oral communication, teamwork, and the ability to respond quickly to real-world challenges.

This method, strongly inspired by Anglo-Saxon educational models, is particularly well suited to dynamic and results-oriented students who are confident speakers and enjoy competitive environments.

Leading European business schools have built their reputation on this practical approach and their close connection to market realities. The most prestigious business schools in Europe include:

London Business School

HEC Paris

INSEAD

ESCP

ESADE

IE

IESE

Copenhagen Business School

Warwick Business School

EDHEC

NOVA

BI Norwegian Business School

Their relationships with recruiters are much more direct. Recruitment fairs, highly effective career services, and active alumni databases are all designed to maximise immediate employability. However, this professional focus can sometimes result in less academically detailed course content. Teaching materials are often more concise, textbooks may not be provided, and the level of theoretical depth varies depending on the programme.

The type of master’s degree must also be taken into account. A Master in Finance remains highly competitive, even at a business school, with a strong technical component and demanding admission requirements. A Master in Management may be more accessible, particularly at Tier 2 institutions, where cohorts tend to include students from a wider range of academic backgrounds.

Trade-offs Based on Your Profile

When making your choice, keep in mind that it is rare to find a programme that meets every possible criterion. Universities encourage intellectual rigour, methodical thinking, a deeper understanding of concepts, and strong analytical skills. They are well suited to students considering careers in technical, regulatory, institutional, or academic environments.

Business schools provide rapid exposure to the culture and expectations of the corporate world while developing interpersonal skills, leadership, and project management abilities. They offer a direct pathway into competitive industries such as consulting, tech, and, in many cases, finance.

Finally, the financial aspect should not be underestimated. Tuition fees at the most prestigious business schools can range from €20,000 to €50,000 per year, while universities often provide high-quality programmes at a much more affordable cost. Although these high fees may seem discouraging, several practical funding options are available, including merit-based scholarships, financial aid, European funding programmes, and, most importantly, honour loans. We will discuss all of these options at the end.

Geographic Positioning

A master’s degree is never just an academic qualification. It is a strategic investment that gives you access to a specific job market. This is where many students make a mistake: they choose a programme based on its name or perceived prestige without considering the recruitment environment to which the degree actually provides access.

The reality is simple: most companies recruit locally,or at least from institutions they regularly work with. They organise on-campus events, take part in conferences, and receive CVs directly through partner career services. They are connected to a local ecosystem, not to a global list of prestigious institutions.

There is no universal ranking that applies everywhere. What matters is how well the programme is recognised in the region where you want to work. For example, the Master in Strategy and International Management (SIM) at the University of St. Gallen is highly valued in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, where it provides excellent access to consulting firms. However, the programme is much less familiar to recruiters in Spain or France.

Conversely, the Master in Management at HEC Paris has an excellent reputation in France and throughout Western Europe, but it is far less visible in Scandinavian or German-speaking markets, except among international investment banks.

Regional Analysis of Master’s Programmes

United Kingdom and Ireland : The London School of Economics (LSE) and London Business School (LBS) clearly dominate the market, with Imperial College and Warwick Business School forming a strong second group. For students targeting London, Zurich, Paris, or Milan, completing a master’s degree at an international Tier 1 institution is often more effective.

A Degree = a Ticket to a Specific Market

As mentioned earlier, this point is fundamental: enrolling in a master’s programme often means purchasing a ticket to a specific job market. This is particularly true in countries where access to employment depends on obtaining a visa, such as the United States or the United Kingdom, but also in European countries where companies recruit heavily from local campuses.

Even with the same qualification, a student who completes the programme remotely may find it more difficult to compete with students who studied locally, built a professional network, and participated in internal recruitment activities.

Types of Master’s Degrees

MiM, MiF, or Specialised Master’s Degree

Before committing to a programme, it is essential to understand the three main categories of master’s degrees available in Belgium and across Europe:

Master in Management (MiM)

Master in Finance (MiF)

Specialised master’s degrees

Master in Management (MiM)

The Master in Management is the most general of the three. It is designed for students who want to keep as many options open as possible, including consulting, strategy, marketing, corporate roles, and tech. This type of master’s degree allows you to refine your choices over time through a wide variety of electives and specialisations.

A strong MiM allows you to enter a prestigious institution without having completed your bachelor’s degree there, experience an international environment, expand your network, study abroad, learn a new language, and benefit from a highly professional setting.

The academic content is often relatively general and may sometimes overlap with knowledge acquired during a bachelor’s degree. However, the perceived value of the qualification, access to recruiters, and the institutional environment it provides can make a significant difference.

You should nevertheless bear in mind that, for certain technical careers such as investment banking, private equity, or hedge funds, a MiM alone may not be sufficient. In these cases, you will need to compensate with an additional specialisation, certifications, practical experience, and a highly active professional network.

Master in Finance (MiF)

The Master in Finance is designed for students who already have a clear idea of their career direction and who are targeting the most demanding roles in finance, such as investment banking, asset management, sales and trading, or private equity.

These are selective master’s programmes, with admission often based on strict academic criteria: an excellent GPA, high GMAT scores, relevant internships, and strong quantitative skills. The curriculum is generally structured around financial modelling, capital markets, company valuation, portfolio management, and derivatives. The workload is intense, expectations are clear, and career opportunities are highly selective.

A MiF is therefore an accelerator. It leaves limited room to explore other options, but it maximises your chances of entering high-level finance if that is your clearly defined goal. It is particularly well suited to rigorous, competitive students who already have a clear sense of direction.

Specialised master’s degrees

The third option consists of specialised master’s degrees. Digital marketing, supply chain management, business analytics, data science, risk management, and sustainability are just a few examples. These programmes focus on highly specific professional fields and train you to become an immediately operational specialist.

Their main advantage is the competitiveness they provide within a clearly defined field. They appeal to employers looking for candidates who can immediately take on technical or sector-specific roles. Their main disadvantage, however, is their rigidity. Once you commit to a specialisation, it can be difficult to move away from it, particularly if you later change your career plans.

These master’s degrees are therefore particularly suitable for determined students who are passionate about their chosen subject and ready to invest in highly specialised expertise. They are less suitable for those who still want to explore several career options.

One Year or Two Years

Another important decision concerns the length of your master’s degree. Choosing between a one-year and a two-year programme should not be taken lightly, as this decision reflects your level of preparation, your professional ambitions, and the recruitment practices of your target industry.

The One-Year Master’s Degree

Choosing a shorter programme offers several practical advantages. You enter the job market more quickly, reduce the overall cost of your studies, and often benefit from a more professionally focused format, with little or no academic dissertation to complete. It is an intensive and demanding format, usually focused on the essentials.

However, this type of master’s degree is not suitable for everyone. It is particularly appropriate if:

You already know exactly which sector you want to enter.

You have one or more significant internships to highlight.

You have prepared your applications in advance, particularly in industries where recruitment begins very early.

This is especially true in investment banking, strategy consulting, and sales and trading, where applications for summer internships sometimes open in July for the following summer. This means that if you begin your master’s degree in September, you may need to apply before classes have even started. In other words, you must arrive fully prepared, with a strong CV, a completed GMAT, and applications already under way.

Another crucial consideration is that most summer internships are reserved for students who are still enrolled in education. Once you graduate, you may no longer be eligible for many internship opportunities. This can make entering the job market more difficult if your profile is not already competitive.

The Two-Year Master’s Degree

A two-year master’s degree offers significantly more flexibility. It is particularly suitable for two types of students:

Those who do not yet have a clear idea of their professional direction.

Those whose CV lacks practical experience or strategic internships.

In both cases, the additional time becomes an advantage. It allows you to explore different options, personalise your academic pathway, study abroad, or pursue a more targeted specialisation. Most importantly, the opportunity to complete a summer internship at the end of the first year is a decisive advantage. This experience connects you directly with the professional world, strengthens the credibility of your profile, and may lead to a job offer before you have even completed your master’s degree.

A longer programme also gives you more time to become involved in student organisations, develop your network, build a coherent personal narrative, and apply thoughtfully to the best opportunities. For Belgian students considering moving to another country, changing industries, or strengthening their academic profile, it is often the best option.

Key Takeaways

If you already have a competitive CV, a clear professional position, and a well-defined application strategy, a one-year master’s degree may be sufficient, provided that you make the most of every day from the very beginning.

If you need time to explore, build a strong profile, or access strategic summer internships, a two-year programme is a valuable opportunity, not an unnecessary detour.

In all cases, do not make this decision based on superficial criteria. One additional year today could save you five years tomorrow. This is not a race against time. It is an investment in your future career.

Choosing Your Master’s Degree

A Strategic Decision, Not Just an Academic Programme

At this stage, you should have a better understanding of the world of master’s degrees, their different approaches, formats, and challenges. It is therefore time to address the central question: how should you choose the right programme ? ?

Choosing the wrong programme can close doors for a long time, sometimes without you even realising it. This is why it is essential to structure your decision carefully.

Completing a master’s degree, particularly abroad or at a prestigious institution, also represents a substantial investment. Tuition fees, accommodation, transport, and everyday living costs can easily exceed €30,000 to €40,000 for a single year. This is therefore not a minor decision. If you are investing this much time, energy, and money, you need to maximise your return on investment in the strictest sense. This requires asking yourself the right questions and avoiding default decisions or unrealistic assumptions.

Three Questions to Guide Your Choice

Where would you like to work after completing your master’s degree? ?

Which industry would you like to enter? ?

How much are you prepared to invest? ?

If you answer these three questions honestly, you will already eliminate most potential mismatches. You will begin aligning your profile, resources, and ambitions. This is not a decision to make by copying a friend or following a trend. It is an individual choice that must be carefully considered and fully accepted.

Before continuing, take some time to sit down with a pen and paper and write down your answers to these three questions.

Where Do You Want to Work in the Future?

Before choosing a master’s degree, you must answer one essential question: in which country would you like to begin your career? A master’s degree is not simply an academic programme. It is also a ticket to a specific job market.

If you want to work in London, complete your master’s degree in London. If you are targeting Brussels, choose an institution with a strong placement record in the Belgian capital. In other words, you are not only selecting a programme. You are also choosing an ecosystem, a professional network, and a brand that is recognised locally.

However, simply being physically present in a country does not automatically make you employable there. Language plays a crucial role. If you want to work in Paris, fluency in French is essential. The same applies to Germany, Spain, and Italy. For front-office positions, employers expect complete fluency in the local language, both spoken and written. There are some exceptions where English is often sufficient, such as London, the Nordic countries, and Dubai. However, these destinations remain highly competitive and are generally accessible only to the strongest candidates.

A Practical Example: The Right Decision and the Apparently Good Decision

Consider Léo. He wants to work in strategy consulting. After being admitted to the Master in Management at HEC Paris, he chooses the English-language track. Two years later, he has an excellent degree, a strong network, and a genuine desire to remain in France. However, he still does not speak French. As a result, no consulting firm is willing to hire him despite his academic background. He then tries to find work in Italy but must compete with highly prepared Bocconi graduates who understand the local market perfectly. He eventually finds himself without a job offer, with a prestigious degree and a €50,000 loan to repay.

Now consider Inès. She wants to enter investment banking in London. She chooses LSE for a Master in Finance. It is a significant investment, but it is carefully considered. Through her degree, she obtains a work visa, uses the alumni network, completes the interview process, and receives an offer from J.P. Morgan. Her annual salary is £75,000, plus a £30,000 bonus. Within two years, she repays her loan, establishes herself in the London market, and launches her career in the direction she had chosen.

Avoid inconsistencies. Do not aim for a position in Zurich while studying in Copenhagen. Do not expect to secure a permanent position in London with a degree from Madrid unless the institution has a strong presence in the City. Before committing to a programme, verify two things:

The existence of an active alumni network in your target country.

The recognition of the qualification among local recruiters.

Ask yourself the only question that truly matters: does this degree give me a realistic chance of building a career where I want to live?

If the answer is yes, move forward.

If the answer is no, redesign your path.

The Career That Interests You

Another simple but essential question to ask before choosing an institution or targeting a prestigious master’s degree is: what career do you want to pursue?

Depending on your target industry, recruiters’ expectations, the most recognised institutions, and the selection criteria can vary completely. If you do not take the time to align your strategy from the beginning, you risk targeting the wrong programmes, submitting ineffective applications, or missing major opportunities.

Two of the most popular careers after a business degree are consulting andinvestment banking. These two career paths clearly illustrate how your choice of master’s degree can increase your chances of entering a particular industry.

Consulting

If you are targeting consulting, you should know that major firms such as McKinsey, BCG, and Bain primarily recruit for their local Belgian offices. This means that, beyond technical ability, they expect complete fluency in the relevant national language, a genuine understanding of the Belgian economic context, and the ability to communicate naturally with local clients.

An international degree will not be enough if you cannot demonstrate a strong connection to the local ecosystem. The same principle applies elsewhere. Applying to Bain in Amsterdam or Copenhagen with English as your only language may sometimes be possible, but it is generally reserved for candidates who studied locally at highly ranked institutions. In Zurich, unless you have a highly specific profile, entering a strategy consulting firm while speaking only English is extremely difficult. You will be competing against candidates from the SIM programme, which is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading management master’s degrees.

Investment Banking

The same reasoning is equally important for students targeting investment banking. In Belgium, local offices are generally focused on coverage. They manage client relationships but do not necessarily execute the most technical mergers and acquisitions transactions. The main execution centres, known as deal hubs, are located in cities such as London, Paris, and Frankfurt. These are the places where you will gain exposure to advanced financial modelling, data rooms, negotiations, and the complete management of M&A processes. If you want to work on complex transactions, choose a master’s degree in a city where this activity is concentrated. In London, for example, most American banks centralise their product teams and technical bankers. Switzerland, by contrast, is more focused on wealth management and asset management than on M&A.

Before beginning a master’s degree, conduct thorough research. Analyse salaries, the types of companies established in your target country, and the backgrounds of professionals currently working in your desired positions.

If you are still uncertain, a Master in Management remains an excellent option, particularly at a leading institution. It will allow you to retain flexibility while giving you more time to refine your choices.

However, if you already have a clear idea of your target career, do not waste time. Choose your programme according to the industry, country, and specific employment opportunities. Approach your strategy like a professional. This is how you build a competitive, coherent, and immediately operational profile.

The Budget to Allocate

The final question to ask before choosing a master’s degree abroad is whether the investment is truly worthwhile. This should not be assessed only in terms of prestige or personal ambition, but also in terms of actual financial return. A master’s degree, particularly at a recognised business school, is not simply an academic qualification. It is a major financial investment. Like any good investor, you should therefore think in terms of return on investment.

Begin by calculating the total cost. Do not limit your calculation to tuition fees. Add every expense associated with the programme, including tuition, accommodation, transport, food, administrative costs, and other living expenses. If the programme allows you to complete a paid internship or work part time, take that income into account as well.

Next, examine your professional objective carefully. In which industry and country do you want to work after graduation? Research the average gross salary for a junior position in that industry and city. This information can be found on platforms such as Glassdoor or through conversations with alumni already working in the field.

Once you have estimated the salary, subtract the cost of living in the city where you expect to begin your career. The remaining amount represents your annual savings capacity, meaning the amount you could theoretically use to repay the cost of your education. Divide the total cost of your master’s degree by your annual savings capacity. The result is known as the payback period, which is the number of years required to recover the cost of your master’s degree.

If the result exceeds ten years, you should reconsider the investment.

Ideally, the payback period should be between three and five years for the master’s degree to be considered a rational financial decision.

A Practical Example

Suppose you complete a master’s degree in finance in London. Tuition fees, accommodation, and daily living expenses bring the total cost of the year to €50,000. After graduating, you secure an investment banking position with a gross annual salary of £60,000, approximately €70,000. After taxes and living expenses, you may be able to save €15,000 per year. You would therefore repay the cost in approximately three to four years, making it a coherent investment.

By contrast, suppose you complete a master’s degree in Paris for a similar total cost but begin a job paying €36,000 gross per year in a less highly paid industry. Your annual savings capacity falls to €5,000. The payback period would then be approximately nine to ten years, with more limited career mobility. In this situation, the investment requires careful consideration.

The following figures provide an approximate indication of monthly living costs in major European student cities, including accommodation :

Brussels: 1 000 to 1 300

London: 1 800

Paris : 1 500

Milan : 1 200

Rotterdam or Amsterdam : 1 200

Madrid or Barcelone : 1 000

Stockholm : 1 300 to 1 500

Zurich or St Gallen : 1 700

To compare different target master’s degrees, consult the dedicated module, which provides a clear analysis of the requirements for admission to each programme.

Aim high, but always maintain a strategic approach and assess your investment as an investor would.

Selecting the Master’s Degrees to Apply For

Building Your List of Master’s Programmes

Once you have a clear idea of the type of master’s degree you want, the next step is to build a targeted application list. This should not be a spreadsheet filled with ten programmes selected quickly and without careful thought. It should be a strategic and coherent selection that is aligned with your profile. There is no need to apply too widely. What matters is not quantity, but relevance.

Five carefully selected and thoroughly prepared applications already represent a considerable amount of work if you intend to approach the process seriously. This is exactly what you should do.

Why Limit the Number of Applications?

The first reason is cost. Every application represents an investment, including application fees, which are often around €100, the GMAT or GRE, an English-language test, official translations, and possible additional expenses. Submitting ten poorly targeted applications can quickly become expensive.

The second reason is time. A strong application cannot be improvised. You need to study each programme carefully, understand the selection criteria, personalise your motivation letter, and sometimes complete a video interview or write an essay. This is not simply a matter of copying and pasting your CV. It is a genuine exercise in strategically aligning your profile with the identity of the institution.

An effective approach to balancing ambition and realism is:

Two ambitious applications: highly selective programmes that you would love to join, even though the competition is intense.

Two aligned applications: strong institutions that match your profile and where you have a reasonable chance of admission.

One safety application: a reliable programme where your profile is clearly above the average level of admitted students.

Adjust this distribution according to the strength of your application. A highly competitive candidate may aim higher and apply to several Tier 1 institutions. If your profile is still developing, you should be more cautious with your main applications.

In every case, begin early. Ideally, you should finalise your list at least six months before applications open, which is often around September or October. This gives you the summer to prepare properly. This preparation period allows you to work on the GMAT, TOEFL or IELTS, your CV, recommendation letters, and essays. Nothing should be improvised.

Informal Quotas

There is a reality that few institutions openly discuss but that is widely understood: master’s programmes seek national diversity. This helps them strengthen their position in rankings and provide a more international educational experience.

In practice, this means that you are not necessarily competing against the entire pool of international applicants. You are often competing more directly with other students from your country. In Belgium, your main competitors may be students from Solvay, UCLouvain, Ghent University, KU Leuven, and similar institutions. These are the candidates you need to outperform, rather than an Oxford or HEC Paris graduate from another country.

This changes the situation significantly. It may give you considerably more room than you expect, provided that you act strategically. Choose the right programmes, investigate admission patterns by nationality where possible, select the right application round, and build a carefully calibrated application without vague sections or generic statements. Your application must demonstrate that you understand the institution’s expectations.

You have all the necessary tools. You now need to use them intelligently.

The Verticality of Your Profile

What distinguishes a genuinely strong application is not necessarily an exceptional GMAT score or a perfect academic average. The decisive factor is often the coherence of your background, the clarity of your direction, and the verticality of your profile. In other words, does everything in your application support the objective you claim to pursue? Or does your profile appear to consist of unrelated experiences with no clear logic?

Consider an example. You are applying for a master’s degree in finance with the ambition of working in investment banking or private equity. A candidate who has completed finance internships, participated in finance-focused competitions, or joined a finance club at university will immediately appear credible, even with an average GMAT score. Why? Because each part of the candidate’s profile tells the same story. It demonstrates genuine intention, sustained commitment, and a clear direction.

By contrast, a candidate with excellent academic results but an unclear or overly general background, with no experience supporting the stated objective, may struggle to convince the admissions committee. This is not necessarily unfair. Institutions value alignment between ambition, practical action, and academic choices.

A Coherent Profile Cannot Be Created at the Last Minute

If you already have an idea of your professional direction, it is important to begin acting on it during the early years of your studies. This does not mean limiting yourself too soon. It means beginning to send the right signals by choosing relevant internships, participating in sector-related projects, developing additional skills, seeking suitable mentors, and creating a clear theme throughout your activities.

A strong profile tells a smooth and logical story. It is not simply a collection of unrelated experiences. Admissions committees do not expect a perfect CV. They expect a profile that is easy to understand. They want to know why you are applying for this master’s degree, how it fits naturally into your development, and how it connects with your professional objectives.

Be Intentional, Not Decorative

Every experience you include in your application can become an advantage, provided that it supports a coherent project. Prioritise clarity, authenticity, and consistency in your choices. These qualities give credibility to your application.

There is no need to achieve absolute excellence in every category. The objective is not to outperform everyone in every area. It is to create the clear impression of a candidate who is self-aware, structured, and ready to move to the next stage. This is what verticality means: a background that progresses in a clear and deliberate direction. More than any individual score, this is what will help you stand out.

How Master’s Applications Work

We now turn to a key stage: the application process. This is the standard selection process used by leading universities and business schools. It is important to understand from the beginning that it involves much more than sending a CV by email. You must submit a complete application, carefully prepared according to a specific procedure and often accompanied by an application fee.

Everything is completed online through the website of the institution concerned. In most cases, you only have one opportunity per year to apply for each programme. Once the deadline has passed, you must wait until the following academic year. You therefore need to organise yourself, plan ahead, and prepare a complete application in advance. A rushed or late application can cost you an entire year.

Some institutions, such as HEC Paris, ESCP, or Bocconi, allow you to indicate several programme preferences within the same application. For example, when applying to HEC Paris, you might select the Master in Finance as your first choice and the Master in Management as your second choice. If your profile does not meet the standard required for the finance programme but remains strong overall, you may be considered for your second choice. This can be a useful system, provided that you understand how it works.

Building a Convincing Application

Your application will be reviewed by experienced individuals, often alumni or members of the academic staff. It must therefore demonstrate strong coherence. Nothing should appear generic. Every item on your CV, every sentence in your motivation letter, and every programme choice should communicate one message: you know where you are going and why you have chosen this particular institution.

Preparing an application is not simply about submitting documents. It is about presenting and defending a structured and credible project.

Two Main Application Systems

Most applications take place between September and March during the final year of your bachelor’s degree. However, the exact timing depends on the application system used by the institution. There are two main models.

The Round-Based System

This is the most common format among leading business schools. Applications open in several successive rounds, usually three or four, between October and April. The principle is straightforward: the earlier you apply, the greater your chances may be. This is because more places are available, competition may be less intense, and the admissions committee has more flexibility.

Waiting until the final round means entering the process when many strong candidates have already been admitted, few places remain, and the committee has already reviewed a large number of profiles. Even a good application may receive less attention if it is submitted too late.

The Rolling Admissions System

In this system, there are no formal rounds. You can apply at any time while the application portal remains open. The institution reviews applications as they are received. This means that each admitted candidate reduces the number of available places. Waiting creates the risk that the programme will become full before the official closing date. This system is used by institutions such as the London School of Economics.

Required Documents

To maximise your chances, you must prepare every stage methodically and carefully.

The documents generally required include:

Academic transcripts

CV

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Essays

IELTS / TOEFL

GMAT / GRE

Letters of recommendation

Video interview

Each document indirectly demonstrates your professionalism and determination. If you are targeting a leading business school, your level of preparation should be visible not only in what you say, but also in the quality of what you submit.

All these documents are covered in the DOCUMENTS module.

Timing

Remember that preparing an application requires time and planning. Tests such as the GMAT, TOEFL, or IELTS, the creation of a strong CV, the collection of recommendation letters, and the careful preparation of essays all require serious work. Nothing should be improvised. You need to anticipate each stage, organise yourself, and allow several weeks or even months to refine every component and submit an excellent application.

If you are still applying for summer internships, it may be better to wait until the second round rather than submitting an incomplete application too early. The results of your internship applications may strengthen your master’s application. Applying too early without being able to include all the strongest elements of your profile could prevent you from benefiting from an important competitive advantage.

Preparation Plan for Master’s Applications

Summer After the Second Year of Your Bachelor’s Degree : begin preparing for the GMAT and take the test in September. Ideally, do so after an international exchange to maximise your level of English.

Autumn of the Third Year : identify the professors who could recommend you. Explain your project to them and request one or more letters of recommendation. Many Belgian students assume that prestigious international institutions are not accessible to them. They believe that tuition fees are too high, that living in London or Paris is unaffordable, and that these programmes are reserved for an elite or for students from wealthy families. Although this reasoning is understandable and widespread, it can represent a major strategic mistake.

In reality, there are practical ways to finance a master’s degree. If you are serious, organised, and proactive, you can attend a leading institution without compromising your long-term financial stability.

Scholarships

Scholarships do exist, and they are not reserved exclusively for the highest-ranking students or exceptional candidates. Most European universities offer partial or full scholarships to international students.

Some scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit. Others consider family income, personal background, geographical origin, or the motivation demonstrated in the application. This is not necessarily an inaccessible system reserved for a small elite. It is a genuine financial tool that should be used strategically.

Institutions such as HEC Paris, Bocconi, London Business School, Rotterdam School of Management, and IE have internal scholarship funds. You should also explore public funding opportunities, including programmes offered by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Erasmus Mundus, and private Belgian or European foundations.

The main requirement is to prepare early. The best scholarships are often awarded during early application rounds. You will need a strong academic record, a convincing motivation letter, and sometimes a specific interview. Prepare these elements in advance. Students who begin early usually have a significant advantage.

What If Scholarships Are Not Enough?

Another option is often overlooked: student loans with favourable conditions, sometimes known as honour loans or merit-based loans. These arrangements may allow students to borrow without traditional guarantees, at preferential interest rates, with repayments beginning two or three years after entering employment.

In Belgium, some banks are beginning to develop similar products for students pursuing a master’s degree abroad. Contact your bank or the financial institutions partnered with your target schools.

This is obviously not free money. However, if you enter a recognised programme that significantly increases your chances of obtaining a qualified and well-paid position, such a loan may be considered an investment rather than simply a financial burden. It is a calculated bet on your future potential.

Conclusion

Money should not become an excuse or a reason to exclude yourself automatically from ambitious opportunities. Solutions exist. However, you need to know where to look, be willing to ask, and present your project with clarity and determination.

Are you targeting a demanding, ambitious, and distinctive career? Do not begin by limiting yourself. Prepare a strong application, identify the right contacts, and search for the resources that will allow you to achieve your objectives.

The resources exist. It is your responsibility to activate them.

Belgium

After analysing all these options and possible paths, an important clarification must be made regarding Belgium.

The master’s degrees offered by Belgian universities are of a very high quality. Courses are predominantly theoretical, academic standards are high, and tuition fees are often extremely low compared with institutions such as LSE or LBS.

You are not required to take out a major loan to attend one of Europe’s leading institutions with the goal of entering investment banking in London. If your ambition is to build your career in Belgium, it is entirely possible to succeed while remaining within the Belgian university system. However, you must keep in mind all the elements discussed in this module and in the module dedicated to different careers, including professional networks, international visibility, employer expectations, specialisation, and mobility. These factors can significantly influence your opportunities, even if you choose to remain in the Belgian job market.

For example, an HEC Paris graduate who completed an internship at Goldman Sachs through the institution’s alumni network will begin with a clear advantage over you, even when applying for a position in Brussels.
